13 TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR FIRST JOB No one ever said that entering the job market is easy. Nowadays a recent college graduate takes an average of six months to a year to find a job with a fixed contract if he isn’t fortunate enough to have the support of a job placement service in his university or center of studies. To keep this from happening we are going to share some tricks with you for improving your marketability and finding work as quickly as possible. 1. Think about where you would like to be in the future (type of company, sector, location). 2. Set priorities regarding the type of work you would like to do. Defining your goals is very important. Perhaps you won’t reach them in your first or second job experience, because you may have to pass through several positions before reaching them, but precisely this experience will train you professionally. 3. In your CV list your training, other languages and levels, any internships you may have done, and if you have had the chance to make contact with the employment world. Also, don’t forget to include any volunteer work you may have been involved in, because this provides the interviewer with much more important information than what we may think. 4. Bear in mind that specialization is important, although for a first job flexible young adults, with an open mind and willingness to carry out several tasks at the same time, are usually sought out. 5. Prepare an attractive presentation letter. This tool, combined with your CV, is your indispensible business card when looking for your first job. 6. If you do not have any experience, don’t worry. Think of everything you have done until now. Surely you have been involved in some type of project, perhaps you have been an intern during the summer or over Christmas, or maybe you have lived for a time outside of Spain. All this adds points to the possibility of obtaining an interview. 7. Keep up to date on current events: read the online press. Interviewers look for concerned young people who want to know what is going on around them. 8. Look for internships or short-term projects while you study your career. 9. Create your profile in the main job finding websites, set alert parameters so you can receive job offers directly by email. 10. Make yourself visible in social networks. By this I don’t mean Facebook, but Linkedin. Look around before entering your profile. Learn and go for it! 11. Improve your foreign languages. English is an absolute necessity in almost every company. Challenge yourself to learn a third language (Chinese, German). 12. Always prepare your interviews. The Before and During are key to creating the best impression and standing out from the rest of the applicants. 13. Don’t reject job offers with the excuse that you are waiting for the perfect job. Take internships, form part of a team, start learning the company culture and internal processes. Propose ideas, show interest in the company’s business project and be passionate. ©Impulsando y Entrenando tu Talento |
