Jobs Tips

MORE THAN 50 YEARS OLD

I JUST TURNED 50 NOW WHAT?

Many professionals dream about a career change when they are about to reach 50. Some feel they have spent too much time working in the same sector, others that they have little or no chance of finding a job and are hoping for early retirement. There are even some who are bored with doing the same tasks after working for 30 years and are looking for new paths.

When we reach 50 our mind is focused on how to move up in our careers by hooking on to projects that attract us, how to respond to employment opportunities, and, why not, how to make our dreams come true. However, the shakeup of the employment market has suddenly swept away our plans and has put us face to face with a cruel labor market that rejects valuable professionals due to their age.

Here we are, 50 years old and the time has come to think about retaking the reigns of our career and trying to recover the dream by being useful and active. How?

1. Doing an important exercise of reflecting on, clearly defining and putting down in writing who I am. Writing something down helps us center our ideas and allows us to reread, revise and develop them.

2. Drawing up a list of professional fields we’re excited about. The door of opportunity opens in the most unlikely places and lets us see things that we had not thought of before.

3. Learning to discover our personal and professional aptitudes and skills and finding out that they can be put to work in many more fields than the one we are in now.

4. Paying attention to what is around us, to projects that before we would not have paid any attention to because we were absorbed by our day to day tasks and didn’t let ourselves get distracted.

5. Exploring the field(s) of action that interests us and trying to see ourselves in them. It works!

6. Making a list of priorities from different perspectives:

  • The sector

  • The risk that I am willing to take if it means breaking with everything I have known until now

  • The minimum salary I consider worth fighting for

  • The number of weekly or monthly trips I would like to make

7. Speaking with other people who help us value aspects of our career and skills that we may well have overlooked or undervalued.

8. Making a list of our successes and reflecting on them.

9. Letting ourselves be coached by experts in Career Management.

10. Constructing, maintaining, managing, and cultivating a good list of contacts. We all have contacts. The key is knowing how to uncover them.

11. Keeping in mind that ventures and the option of having our own business are possible alternatives.

12. Making time for ourselves and our personal life.
